Overview

What to expect

Wallpaper is unforgiving. A seam that is a millimetre out is visible from across the room, a pattern that drifts cannot be nudged back, and paper hung on a wall that was not prepared will lift at the edges within a season. Removal is often the harder half: old paper comes off in layers, the backing stays behind, and what is underneath is anybody's guess until it is bare. We strip it properly, repair what the paper was hiding, and size the wall before anything new goes on.

What is included

  • Pattern matching and plumb hanging on every drop
  • Steam stripping, including stubborn backing paper
  • Plaster and gyprock repair once the wall is bare
  • Walls sized and sealed before new paper goes up
  • Feature walls or whole rooms
  • Painting the rest of the room in the same visit

Why people in the Central West choose Murrays Painting

Over 50 years in the trade

Over fifty years in the trade. There is very little John has not already seen go wrong on a house, which is mostly what experience buys you.

John quotes it and supervises it

He prices the job himself and checks the preparation before a topcoat goes on, with Ron running the crew on site. The same two people from the quote to the last coat.

Preparation comes first

Most of the work happens before any colour appears. Sanding, filling, priming and sealing are what decide whether the finish lasts three years or fifteen.

Dulux and Porters materials

Premium paint on every job, with oil-based sealers on woodwork. Cheaper products cost less on the invoice and more on the repaint.

12-month workmanship guarantee

Twelve months on labour and materials. If something is not right in that time, John comes back and sorts it out.

Licensed, insured, reviewed

NSW licence 155166C, public liability and workers compensation, and a five star rating on Google from customers across the Central West.

How it works

Off the wall, or onto it, without the mess

Wallpaper punishes shortcuts. Whether we are taking it off or putting it up, most of the work happens before the interesting part starts.

01

Look behind the paper

John checks what he is dealing with — how many layers, what is underneath, whether the wall is plaster or gyprock. That decides the method and the price.

02

Strip and repair

Steamed off in layers, backing paper included, then the wall gets made good. Old paper hides a lot of patching, and it all has to come back flat.

03

Prepare and size

Sanded, sealed and sized so the new paper bonds evenly and comes off cleanly for whoever deals with it next.

04

Hang it plumb

First drop set against a plumb line, not the corner, because corners are never square. Patterns matched at every seam, edges rolled, offcuts taken away.

We are repeat customers and have once again been extremely happy with the quality of work and service provided. We recently had both the interior and exterior of our home painted, and the results were outstanding. The attention to detail was exceptional, and the quality of the workmanship really shows in the finished product. The entire team was professional, friendly, respectful and a pleasure to have around our home. They took great care throughout the job, kept everything tidy and ensured every detail was finished to a high standard. There's a reason we chose to use them again, and we wouldn't hesitate to do so in the future.

I've used John and the team at Murrays Painting on several projects now and have always been very happy with their work. The quality is consistently high, they're punctual, reliable and communication is always great. As a builder, it's important to have trades you can trust, and I'd have no hesitation recommending Murrays Painting.

John and his team did an amazing job of a very complex project. Their quote was extremely reasonable compared to other quotes received. Their attention to detail throughout the project was impeccable. The work involved a total repaint, both externally and internally, of a very large timber double storey historic residence. The final magnificent result of their many months of labour are a reflection of their understanding and pride for their profession.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Labour only, at $90 an hour, because you supply the paper. A typical room runs about two days. Stripping old paper often takes longer than hanging new, so a strip and re-hang is not simply double.

Nobody knows until it is off, and old paper hides a lot of patching. The wall almost always needs making good before anything new goes up, which is priced once John can actually see it.

No. John comes out, looks at the job with you and gives you an estimate on site, a written quote, or both. He handles every quote himself rather than sending someone else. On jobs far enough out that they need travel or a night away, those costs are quoted as part of the job so you can see them.

Every job carries a 12-month workmanship guarantee. John inspects at the preparation stage, which is where most problems are still cheap to fix, and again at the end. If something needs attention after that, call him.

Around $500 excluding GST. Below that the setup and travel usually cost more than the work is worth, and John will tell you straight rather than quote you something silly.

It depends on the surfaces more than the size, which is why there is no price list here. John prices per room, per hour, per square metre or per day depending on what suits the job, plus materials. The only accurate answer comes from him seeing it, and that visit is free.
