Every job gets the same treatment: thorough preparation, Dulux materials, supervision by John himself, and a 12-month workmanship guarantee.

Services / Heritage & Federation / Bathurst

Murrays Painting take on heritage and Victorian painting across Bathurst, NSW 2795, working from our base in Orange about 55 kilometres west. Bathurst is the oldest inland settlement in Australia and the built stock shows it, with Victorian terraces and detailed 1880s residences through the older streets and Federation bungalows further out through Kelso. That architecture needs brush work rather than spray, colour schemes matched to the period, and someone who will pick out every moulding and corbel by hand instead of rolling straight over it. John Murray inspects each job at preparation stage. We use Dulux and Porters products, carry a 12-month workmanship guarantee, and factor accommodation into larger multi-day Bathurst projects so the crew stays on site rather than losing hours to the drive.

Why people in Bathurst choose Murrays Painting

Over 50 years in the trade

Over fifty years in the trade. There is very little John has not already seen go wrong on a house, which is mostly what experience buys you.

John quotes it and supervises it

He prices the job himself and checks the preparation before a topcoat goes on, with Ron running the crew on site. The same two people from the quote to the last coat.

Preparation comes first

Most of the work happens before any colour appears. Sanding, filling, priming and sealing are what decide whether the finish lasts three years or fifteen.

Dulux and Porters materials

Premium paint on every job, with oil-based sealers on woodwork. Cheaper products cost less on the invoice and more on the repaint.

12-month workmanship guarantee

Twelve months on labour and materials. If something is not right in that time, John comes back and sorts it out.

Licensed, insured, reviewed

NSW licence 155166C, public liability and workers compensation, and a five star rating on Google from customers across the Central West.

What this work involves in Bathurst

Oldest inland settlement in Australia. Gold rush heritage, Victorian architecture and Charles Sturt University precinct.

Gold rush architecture and what it asks for

The gold rush began here in 1851 and the money that came with it built the streetscapes people still photograph today. Along William Street and through the older residential pockets you get bracketed eaves, cast iron, rendered parapets and joinery with more profile than anything built since. None of it suits a fast job. A Victorian facade done properly might carry three or more colours, with the body, the trim and the fine detail all separated by hand. Spray equipment cannot make those decisions, which is why we brush the detail even when it takes three times as long.

Render, stone and the damp problem

A lot of Bathurst's older buildings are rendered masonry or stone, and the failure we get called to most often is paint lifting off in sheets near the base of a wall. That is almost never a paint problem. It is moisture coming up through the wall with nowhere to go, usually because someone sealed the surface with a modern film that will not let it breathe. The fix is a permeable system that lets the wall dry outward. Putting another impermeable coat over the top buys about two years.

Travelling for the work

Bathurst is a regular run for us rather than an occasional trip, and larger jobs are planned with accommodation so the crew works full days instead of burning two hours on the highway. Quotes are free and we do not add a travel charge to Bathurst work.

John and his team did an amazing job of a very complex project. Their quote was extremely reasonable compared to other quotes received. Their attention to detail throughout the project was impeccable. The work involved a total repaint, both externally and internally, of a very large timber double storey historic residence. The final magnificent result of their many months of labour are a reflection of their understanding and pride for their profession.

We are repeat customers and have once again been extremely happy with the quality of work and service provided. We recently had both the interior and exterior of our home painted, and the results were outstanding. The attention to detail was exceptional, and the quality of the workmanship really shows in the finished product. The entire team was professional, friendly, respectful and a pleasure to have around our home. They took great care throughout the job, kept everything tidy and ensured every detail was finished to a high standard. There's a reason we chose to use them again, and we wouldn't hesitate to do so in the future.

FAQ

Questions we get in Bathurst

If your question is not here, call John directly. He would rather have a conversation than send you to a page.

Yes, regularly. Bathurst sits about 55 kilometres east of our base in Orange and it is one of our most common working areas. For larger multi-day projects we factor accommodation in so the crew is on site for full days.

Usually. Original schemes can often be recovered from protected areas of the building, under eaves, behind downpipes or inside window reveals, where the early layers have not been weathered off. Where nothing survives we work from period-appropriate palettes rather than guessing.

Almost always rising damp meeting an impermeable paint film. The moisture cannot escape through the coating so it pushes the paint off instead. The answer is a breathable system, not a thicker one.
