The gold rush began here in 1851 and the money that came with it built the streetscapes people still photograph today. Along William Street and through the older residential pockets you get bracketed eaves, cast iron, rendered parapets and joinery with more profile than anything built since. None of it suits a fast job. A Victorian facade done properly might carry three or more colours, with the body, the trim and the fine detail all separated by hand.
